Pinewood Derby - a classic scouting tradition!

The Pinewood Derby is an awesome Scouting experience.  The Scouts get to build and decorate their own cars and race them.  Parents are allowed to help, but the Scout should do the majority of the designing and construction themselves.

Pack 929 participates in two Pinewood Derbys: Pack 929's Derby which takes place once a year at Willard Elementary School and Potowatomi District Pinewood Derby which takes place once a year at Golf Mill Mall.

Your Scout can make the car as simple or complicated as he likes, within the rules listed below.  He can do all the design work himself, or purchase supplies to design his car.  You can purchase accessories for the cars at the Scout Store on H-41 in Highland Park, Millen Hardware in Wilmette, and Michael's Craft Stores.  There are various decals and paint supplies available, as well as graphite powder for dry axle lubrication, screw-on and stick-on weights.

IMPORTANT NOTES

The kids do the work (with help from the adults).

Make sure cars meet the Pinewood Derby Rules – see below.

All results are calculated electronically by computer and are final!

Put the Scout’s name and Pack number on the bottom of their car.

Pick-up cars after their age group’s awards have been presented – unless the Scout is in the Championship race.  Then, they may pick up their car after the Championship awards are presented.

All cars must pass inspection before they are allowed to race. We follow the rules!

Pack 929 Race Information

Adults and siblings can also race with an additional "family car!"

Pinewood Derby Car Kits will be handed out to all Pack 929 Cub Scouts in a Den or Pack Meeting.  If you intend on purchasing an official kit elsewhere, please let us know so we do not supply you with a car, and thus save the Pack's money.  Additional kits for siblings and adults are often available, possibly at an additional small fee.

Important Rules:

1.  Width shall not exceed 2-3/4 inches.

2.  Length shall not exceed 7 inches.

3.  Weight shall not exceed 5 ounces.

4.  Axles, wheels, and body shall be from the materials provided in the kit.

5.  Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.

6.  No lubricating oil may be used. Axles may be lubricated with powdered graphite or silicone.

7.  The car shall not ride on any kind of spring.

8.  The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.

Procedure
Our Scout's cars are weighed, checked for dangers, numbered, and entered into the system and then handed over to race officials.  Each car is raced multiple times. The computer logs the times that each car crosses the finish line for each race.  The race times are averaged at the conclusion of the race. The fastest car in each division is the winner. Once the car is checked-in, it is handled by race officials only.  All adjustments must be made before the check-in process is complete.

Race Day is tons of fun!  We will vote on cars at the car show, race, and give out awards.  We usually have concessions provided by the older Boy Scouts.  Past years' awards have included:

Trophies, Pins, and/or special Badges for:
