Training

This Trained Leader emblem is worn by leaders who have completed Cub Scout Leader Fast Start, New Leader Essentials, and Leader Specific Training for their positions.

Training shows new leaders how to do their jobs and allows for an interchange of ideas with more experienced leaders. Every Cub Scout deserves qualified, trained leaders who will provide the best program possible, the way it is intended. Trained leaders ensure that the goals of Cub Scouting are met. The leadership training program of the Boy Scouts of America provides this information and helps leaders become confident in carrying out their responsibilities.

Online Learning Center

The BSA Online Learning Center provides a variety of materials, from quick references to complete courses, all designed to help our members improve leadership skills and deliver a quality program.

Cub Scout Leader Fast Start

As the first step in the training continuum, Fast Start Training is meant to provide all the information and resources for new leaders to conduct their first meeting, along with guidance for the meetings that follow. (Available in the Online Learning Center)

Basic Leader Training

Basic Leader Training—including New Leader Essentials and position-specific training—is designed to prepare to all adult leaders in Cub Scouting to become effective in their roles. (Scheduled in the Fall & Spring by the District)

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is advanced training in leadership skills for all adults in BSA programs. (Scheduled every other year by the Council)

Unit Leadership Enhancements

Delivered as a regular part of the pack leaders' meeting, these short training discussions are intended to better equip pack leaders to conduct a quality Cub Scout program.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation is a one-day training event that introduces the skills needed to plan and conduct pack outdoor activities. (Scheduled in the Fall & Spring by the Council)

Outdoor Leader Skills for Webelos Leaders

Designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants, this course teaches outdoor-related skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. (Scheduled in the Fall & Spring by the Council)

Trainer Development Conference

The trainer development conference is part of a continuous process of updating trainers with the latest training methods, principles, and technologies. (Scheduled once a year by the Council)

Youth Protection Training

Every leader in Cub Scouting should complete Youth Protection training, which provides essential information about working with youth. (Available in the Online Learning Center, also part of Basic Leader)

Cub Scout Leader Roundtables

Monthly roundtables provide an opportunity for leaders within a council to share ideas in an ongoing learning experience. (Held the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 at Grace Church on Jackson Street)

University of Scouting

A "convention" for pack leaders that provides an opportunity to attend sessions addressing various facets of the Cub Scout program. (Scheduled once a year by the Council, usually held in January)

National Cub Scouting Conferences

Cub Scout leader training conferences are held at the Philmont Training Center and the Florida Sea Base. Councils recommend individuals, who receive invitations to attend these conferences.

Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense are also available in the Online Learning Center.
